Web components vs React gets framed as a fight, and it mostly is not one. They do not do the same job. Web components are a set of browser APIs for building reusable custom elements. React is a library for keeping the DOM in sync with your data. People line them up because both are how you build UI, but they sit at different layers, and once you see that, the choice gets a lot clearer. I build WebJs on web components, so I have a side, but I want to give you the honest version first.
What each one actually is
Web components are native browser APIs: custom elements (customElements.define), shadow DOM (optional style isolation), and <template> and <slot> for markup and composition. A web component is a real element the browser understands. It works in any page, with any framework or none, because it is part of the HTML specification and not owned by a library.
React is a JavaScript library with its own component model: a virtual DOM (an in-memory copy of the DOM that React diffs on every change), JSX, hooks, and a reconciler. A React component exists only inside React. It is not an element the browser knows about, it is a function React calls to compute what the DOM should be.
That one difference, native element versus library abstraction, is the root of everything below.
Where they genuinely differ
Portability. A React component runs only in a React app. A web component runs anywhere the DOM runs, so the same <date-picker> works in a React page, a Vue page, a Rails template, or plain HTML. If you are shipping a component for other people to drop into stacks you do not control, the web component is the portable unit and it is not close.
State and reactivity. This is React's real strength, and I will not pretend otherwise. Update state and the UI re-renders, and the entire ecosystem is built around that model. Raw web components give you the element and no built-in reactivity, so you either wire it up yourself or use a library that adds it. This gap is exactly why "just use web components" disappoints people coming from React: the platform hands you the component and stops short of the data-to-UI binding they are used to.
Learning curve. Web components lean on HTML, CSS, and the DOM you already know. React asks you to learn JSX, hooks, the rules around them, and usually a state library or two. For a developer who knows the platform, web components have less to learn. For a team already fluent in React, that is not an advantage, it is a wash.
Ecosystem. React wins here, and it is not remotely close. The library selection, the hiring pool, the volume of answered questions, the component libraries, all larger. If your priority is drawing on an enormous existing ecosystem, React is the pragmatic answer and I would not argue you out of it.
The catch, and where WebJs comes in
The honest problem with "just use web components" is the reactivity and full-stack gap. The platform gives you the element but not the data binding, the server rendering, the router, or the data layer. So people reach for React, not because they love the virtual DOM, but because React with Next.js or similar hands them a whole application, while raw web components hand them one primitive and a lot of homework.
That gap is the reason I built WebJs. It stands on native web components, so you keep the portability and the platform-standard model, and it adds the pieces React users take for granted: reactive properties and signals for state, server-side rendering with hydration, file-based routing, typed server actions, and progressive enhancement by default. The component model is the browser's; the framework fills in everything above it. So the real choice is not "web components or React" as raw technologies. It is whether you want your UI built on a portable browser standard with a framework filling the gaps, or on React's library runtime with its ecosystem. Both are defensible.
